The alignment with the Aviva Premiership club signifies a landmark moment for Close House which continues to grow as an institution.

Owner of Newcastle Falcons Semore Kurdi and North East Entrepreneur Graham Wylie put the deal together with the directors of Close House after it was announced this week that Mr Kurdi will ‘own’ Wylie’s horse Prince de Beauchene for a day at the Grand National.

Mr Kurdi successfully bid for the ‘money can’t buy prize’ at Mr Wylie’s Have a Heart Golf Day at Close House last May, with Close House attached tour pro Lee Westwood.

The auction was in aid of the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF) at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle raising a substantial sum for the charity that is close to Mr Wylie’s heart.

Last month the Falcons’ Premiership match at home to London Irish was in support of CHUF raising over £35,000 on the day. Wylie’s involvement with CHUF began two years ago when his two-year-old daughter, Kiera was diagnosed with a complex heart problem after having a routine scan. Kiera’s final operation took place last December and she has since made a full recovery.

Mr Wylie said: “I am delighted to get involved with the Newcastle Falcons for the remainder of the season. The Irish game was a huge success for CHUF and this is a superb step towards raising the profile the charity at the Freeman Hospital. We need to ensure that the unit is supported as fully as possible and feel proud that we have such a skilled team in our region. The Newcastle Falcons really will be wearing the CHUF heart on their sleeves – in recognition of the brave children and young adults who have been on the unit. It is a wonderful collaboration”.

Commercial director Duncan Edward said: “It is fantastic that local businesses are supporting other local businesses and charities in the region. The players are looking forward to meeting some of the brave children who have been treated on the ward and we will be inviting them down for a special treat. They are the real heroes here.

“We had an extremely successful charity event that raised over £35,000 for CHUF, and it is great that we can continue the awareness and fundraising campaign.”
